Let's sew the nightgown.
Incepem sa coasem camasa de noapte

Ottobre pattern for night gown / tiparul Ottobre de camasa de noapte

The sewing order: 1. shoulders; 2. neck band; 3. sleeves; 4. side seams and 5. hems.

Ordinea in care cos: 1. umerii; 2. gatul; 3. manecile; 4. cusaturile laterale; 5. tivurile.

SEAM ALLOWANCES / LARGIMEA TIVURILOR

I use rather wide seam allowances: 1" (2,5 cm) for the shoulder and the side seam (bodice and sleeve); 5/8" for the armholes and sleeve cap and 1/2" for the neckline.

Seam allowances - shoulder seams 1", neck line 1/2"
Tivul de la umar de 2,5 cm si cel de la gat de 1,25 cm

I know that the most knits are designed for a 1/4" seam allowance, but I find this width not very comfortable to sew on. I also know that people from the garment industry mocks home sewers for using - in their eyes - way too wide seam allowances. I have one DVD with Conny Crawford making fun of 'us'  for having larger seam allowances 'just in case'.

Imagine how happy I was when I heard Kennth D. King (professor, of course) saying that he always sews with 1" seam allowances and trim them afterwards, because they offer much more stability when you sew. Sewing with knits with edges that rolls, will be another advantage for larger seam allowances.

However, if you have a pattern that fits well, you can reduce the width of the seam allowances for the curved seems (neck, armhole and sleeve cap) to 5/8". Too large seam allowances are more difficult to sew on curved seam lines. It is not impossible, it is just a bit more difficult.

I start and end the seams with a scrap. I do this because I never use the automatic cutter in my machine. I heard too many horror stories about little pieces of threads remaining in the cutter and causing sewing 'alerts' and extensive search for the little thread which makes the highly computerised machines to stop. I do not bother to clean the tread cutter, because I never use it.

If I start to sew I hold the ends of the thread by hand, to prevent 'bird nests' or let the scrap I use between seams to do that for me.

Besides it is much more economical not to have long tails of thread between seams.

This method works well if you have seams that are enclosed in other slews. Like the shoulder seam, which will be enclosed in the neck band and the sleeve seam.

If I finish a seam, which will not be enclosed, I leave long tails of thread which knot and then I burry by hand in the seam allowance.

THE SHOULDER SEAMS / UMARUL

I use the same method described here

First I stabilise the back shoulder seam with stay tape, the brand I find in the Netherlands. It is fusible and it is made by Vlieseline (Vilene is the international name, as far as I know). I guess you can buy it in the Netherlands and Belgium (French name as well).
If you do not find such a thing, use a band of cotton, 1 cm wide, cut on the length grain. Or a selvage from a woven fabric or a stable lining. Or a small, flexible ribbon. It will be hidden in the seam allowance, anyway.

It is a non woven, but is is strong and flexible. It works as nice as the more expensive stay tapes we import form America or Japan. I do recommend it. From one package you get a lot of shoulder seams done.

I fuse the band on the marked BACK shoulder seam

I also try to chain piece as much as possible, which means that I sew the shoulder seams one after the other, with some stitches 'in the air'  between them.

Mai vreau sa spun ca incerc sa cos cat mai multe tivuri, unul dupa altul (chain piecing / cusutul in lant), cusand cativa pasi in aer intre ele.

Chain piecing the shoulder seams / Cusutul 'in lant'

Why I am putting the stay tape on the back shoulder seam?

Some sewing stars (this is how I call the internationally known pattern makers and teachers) say that it does not matter where you put the stay tape, in the front or in the back.
I follow Linda Lee and Marcy Tilton and choose for the back. Because if you do not open the seams - and this is how we construct the t-shirt - you press the seam allowances towards the back and doing that, the stay tape will be hidden. If I would put it on the front shoulder seam, I will see it all the time inside my t-shirt and I do not want it. Besides, being hidden in under the shoulder seam, it will be protected during the garment's life and often laundry.

After you sew the seam, you serge it and cut the excess of the seam allowance. Or you zigzag it by machine, if you do not have a serger.

My sew allowances are mostly 3/8" to 1/2".

Eu las tivul cu o latime de 1 cm sau 1,25 cm.

Now I press the seam allowance to the back, from the right side. Only from the right side. If you press the seam from the back side, you will get a ridge on the right side, along the shoulder seam.

Press from the right side / se calca pe fata hainei

Top stitch the shoulder seam. I like to topstitch at a 1/4". I forgot to write that I use a walking for the construction, from start to the end. Even if my Bernina has a dual feed foot, I like the walking foot better. Personal preference.

Top stitch 1/4", using the seam and the markings on your foot as a guide (in my case the 1/4" marking, aligned with the seam line).

That's why the shoulder seam must be serged with at least 3/8' width. Otherwise you will not be able to enclose the stay tape in the seam allowance.

Shoulder seam - right side and wrong side - done. You can see that the stay tape is completely enclosed in the seam. Everything is smooth and nice to wear. Especially for kids.
